Game of The Week #1: Battle at the Beach Semifinal: Lynn University (D2) vs. Florida Atlantic University (D2)

 

The Florida Atlantic Owls showed no mercy in their first game at the Battle at the Beach tournament, dismantling the Lynn University Fighting Knights 10-4 on Friday.

 

Owls forward Emilio Stabile kicked off the tournament after he scored four minutes into the first period, starting an avalanche of goals. The period concluded with five more Owl goals added to the scoreboard, placing them in the lead 6-0.

 

The second period started slower for the Owls after Fighting Knights left-wing Benjamin Merrill scored an unassisted goal and was quickly followed 34 seconds later by right-wing Lucca Vicino, putting Lynn on the board.

 

With three minutes left in the second period, the Owls scored two more goals, moving the score to an 8-2.

 

Both teams buried a pair of goals in the third period, bringing the final score to 10-4. The Owls advanced to the championship game, while the Fighting Knights headed into the third-place game.

 

Game of The Week #2: Battle at the Beach: University of Central Florida (D2) vs. University of Tampa (D2)

 

The University of Tampa Spartans defeated the University of Central Florida Knights in game two of the Battle at the Beach tournament, 6-1.

 

Spartans forward Lou Defalco sparked the scoring spree in the game's opening minutes. The period ended with Tampa scoring four more goals and UCF forward Wyatt Rogers scoring the team's only goal for the night.

 

Tampa forwards Brenden Sickles and Nick Sanfilippo racked up two more goals in the second period, putting the Spartans ahead 6-1.

 

After the period ended, the local fire department was called to check the building after some players and fans felt sick.


Due to the troubling circumstances, the rest of the game was canceled for safety purposes, putting Tampa into the championship game and UCF into the third-place game.


After thoroughly testing throughout the night and morning, the fire department officials cleared the building for Saturday’s games.

 

Battle at the Beach: Third-place game: Lynn University (D2) vs. University of Central Florida (D2)

 

The third-place game was a gladiatorial duel between the Knights, ending in a smiting.


Lynn dominated UCF in the third-place game of the Battle at the Beach tournament, winning 10-4 on Saturday.

 

Lynn headed into the game with a vengeance after facing UCF the previous weekend. UCF won 5-4 (OT) on Oct. 18 and lost 4-3 (OT) on Oct. 19.  

 

Lynn left-wing Matthew Diduck opened the blowout by scoring the night's first goal and was trailed closely by three more Fighting Knights, ending the period 4-0.

 

The second period started slower but quickly caught wind after UCF forward Joshua Shimony scored. The period finished with Lynn racking up four more goals and UCF scoring one additional goal.

 

The momentum continued into the final period, with UCF forward Scott Piña scoring in 29 seconds. Although UCF started to fight back in the battle, they could not overcome the wrath of the Lynn Fighting Knights.

 

Lynn took third place in the Battle at the Beach tournament, and UCF placed last.

 

Battle at the Beach: Championship game: Florida Atlantic (D2) vs. University of Tampa (D2)

 

Florida Atlantic Owls continued their reign as Battle at the Beach champions after downing the University of Tampa Spartans 6-3 on Saturday.

 

The first period began swiftly, with Owls forward DJ Randle scoring within two minutes of the puck dropping.


Spartans added two goals to the board, while the Owls’ top-scorer, forward Brady Baehser, attained his first goal of the night, ending the period with a 2-2 tie.

 

The second period moved slowly until the last six minutes when Baehser and Tampa forward Nicholas Zehelein scored.

 

With the scoreboard evened up in the last period, Baehser potted his third goal, putting the Owls ahead. The Owls finished off Tampa with two dagger goals, making them the Battle at the Beach champions again.

 

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (D3) vs. Rollins College (D3)

 

The Rollins College Tars Division 3 team debuted in a two-day weekend series against the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Ice Eagles. The Tars won 2-1 in game one, but they were edged out in game two 4-3.

 

Game one started steadily, with both teams defending their sides, until Ice Eagle forward Griffin Lynch scored an unassisted goal with nine minutes left in the first period.

 

The Tars pushed ahead in the second period after Jack Digirolamo sailed the second goal of the night into the Ice Eagles net, ending the period 2-1.

 

In the third period, neither team could score, leading the Tars to win their first game in program history.

 

Digirolamo kicked off game two by scoring the first goal of the night in the first period, putting the Tars ahead 1-0.

 

The Tars kept the goals coming in the second period, adding two more. The period ended with the Ice Eagles scoring one goal, leaving them behind.

 

The Ice Eagles were behind going into the third period, but they quickly turned the beat around by scoring three straight goals, the last of which was in overtime.

 

University of Tennessee (W) vs. Auburn University (W)

 

The University of Tennessee experienced déjà vu in its debut series against Auburn University, losing both games by a score of 4-0.

 

The Tigers took out their claws in game one, with Gabriella Donato racking up the first two goals and Abby Lin following behind, scoring the last two goals of the night.

 

Game two started the same as game one, with Donato initiating the brutal attack in the first period.

 

The Tigers’ Bridget Farrell joined the attack in the last two minutes of the second period, putting the team ahead 2-0.

 

Lin finished the night after striking two more goals during the final period, concluding the game with another win for the Tigers.

 

The newly added Lady Vols took 17 shots on goal, while the Tigers took 109 shots throughout the weekend series.

 

University of Tennessee (D1) vs. University of Tampa (D1)

 

The weekend battle series between the UTs was not short on goals. Twenty goals were scored in two games featuring two of Division 1’s top teams. 

 

The Spartans’ forward Alexander Moeller began the ping-pong match in game one after scoring in the first four minutes. As the teams continuously matched each other’s goals, the period ended in a 3-3 tie.

 

The second period slowed until the Ice Vols center Tommy Carroll scored, putting them in the lead. With only one minute left in the period, Spartans’ forward Robert Seewagen tied the game again.

 

Both teams headed into the final period ready for a fight, but Tampa forward Justin Evans secured the victory for the Spartans with a final score of 5-4.

 

After the Spartans scrapped by with a win, they went into game two blazing, scoring three goals during the first period to put them ahead 3-0.

 

The Spartans piled on in the second period, creating a four-goal spread at the second intermission, 5-1. With the Ice Vols behind by four and the Spartans guard down, Tennessee had the opportunity to sneak up.


The Ice Vols roared back with three goals in four minutes in the early stages of the third period, including two from Connor Frazer. Tennessee scrambled to tie the game, piling on the shots on goal, but couldn’t break through until the game's dying moments. Matthew Pavek scored Tennessee’s fourth goal of the third period to send the game to overtime remarkably.

 

The Ice Vols’ winger Henry Cohen finished the comeback with an unassisted goal in overtime. Tennessee snatches victory out of the jaws of defeat with five straight goals to leave Tampa stunned.
