The seventh week of the College Hockey South season begins on Thursday, October 17th. The weekend lineup features several in-state rivalries, an SEC showdown in Austin, Texas, and opportunities for teams to unleash their potential.
Game of the Week #1: Friday, October 18th - Auburn (D1) @ Alabama (D1)
The Iron Cup features the bitter rivalry between the Auburn University Tigers and the University of Alabama Frozen Tide. The rivalry between these two teams runs deep. Less than 200 miles separate the two schools in Alabama, and the winner will earn bragging rights.
Currently, 1-6-0 Auburn will enter enemy territory as the underdog. But the Tigers are hungry for a win. They look to change their fate – becoming hunters, not the hunted.
The Frozen Tide are eager to host the Tigers, looking for a win themselves. At 2-5-1 on the season, Alabama looks to avoid adding a tally to any column but the far left – mostly against Auburn.
The Tide’s last win came on opening weekend against Division 2 Alabama-Hunstville. With Alabama's week of rest leading up to the Iron Cup, hopes are high that the team will win.
Both games will be played at the Pelham Civic Complex in Birmingham, AL. Game one of the series will be played on Friday, October 18th, at 6:45 P.M. CT, and the second on Saturday, October 19th, at 3:00 P.M. CT.
Game of the Week #2: Friday, October 18th - Auburn (W) @ Alabama (W)
This weekend, the Iron Cup will also be decided in the Women’s division.
After a slow start in September due to weather delays, the Auburn Ice Hockey team women look to ramp up their season this month. Through six weeks, they have only played two games.
After skating by with a 4-3 win over Georgia on October 4, the Tigers hope to stay undefeated against a formidable Alabama team.
The University of Alabama Women’s team is coming off a 1-1 weekend against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Gamecocks handed the Frozen Tide their first loss of the season, falling 6-4 last Friday night. The women bounced back on Sunday with a dominant 9-4 victory.
Samantha Lantz and Claire Carson have emerged as key players for the Frozen Tide. They will need to bring that same energy and offensive production to beat the hated Auburn Tigers.
The first game will be played on Friday, October 18th, at 3:15 P.M. CT, and the second will be played on Saturday, October 19th, at 1:45 P.M. CT. The teams will face off at the Pelham Civic Complex.
University of Georgia (D1) @ University of Texas (ACHA)
Saturday’s football game is not the only weekend meeting between the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns. The two schools will face off on the gridiron and the ice in Austin, Texas.
The Longhorns are 5-3 on their season thus far. Their last game on October 3rd was a clinic, as they defeated Texas State University 13-3. However, Texas has a formidable opponent in the 5-0-2 Georgia Ice Dawgs.
The Ice Dawgs are coming off an unexpected weekend away from the rink due to Hurricane Milton. Georgia was scheduled to take on Florida Atlantic but saw their game canceled because of the devastating storm. Their fresh legs will look to take down the Longhorns as part of the University of Georgia’s great migration to Austin.
Cross-conference games don’t often generate this much hype, but this should be an exciting clash that sets the stage for Saturday’s football game.
The Longhorns and Ice Dawgs will take the ice at Chaparral Ice Arena. Game one is set for Friday, October 18th, at 8:30 P.M. CT. Game two is set for Sunday, October 20th at 11:30 A.M. ET.
Florida State University (D3) @ Florida Institute of Technology (D3)
Like many other Florida College Hockey South teams, hurricanes have dampened the Florida State Seminoles’ and Florida Tech Panthers’ seasons. However, both teams are ready to return to the rink.
Florida State has played two games, both against Georgia Tech. Their first showing was a 5-3 win over the Yellow Jackets. The second game ended in a 3-3 draw. Over a month removed from action, the Seminoles are eager to add more tallies to their win column.
The Florida Tech Panthers sit at 3-1 after facing Embry-Riddle and Miami. Their only loss was their last game, falling short to the Hurricanes at 6-5. Center Derek Morgia leads the Panthers in points with three goals and six assists.
The teams will meet on Friday, October 18th, at 7:00 P.M. ET at the Daytona Ice Arena. On Saturday, October 19th, they will take the ice at Space Coast Iceplex at 11:00 P.M. ET.
Vanderbilt University (D2) @ University of Alabama in Huntsville (D2)
The Vanderbilt Commodores have played seven games in six weeks and have skated off the ice victorious four times. Forward Harrison Parent has five goals in seven games and looks to lead the charge Friday night.
The Commodores won their first three games of the season by decisive margins but could not maintain their success. Vanderbilt dropped its next three, including a sweep at the hands of top-rival Tennessee. Vandy turned things around two weeks ago with a win against Indiana, and they hope to continue this success.
Huntsville will take the ice for the first time in over a month. The Chargers are 0-4 and are looking to break through against the Commodores. Alabama-Huntsville has had a hard time getting its offense on track, scoring just four goals in its first four games.
The first game is Friday, October 18th, at 9:45 P.M. CT, and the second is Saturday, October 19th, at 2:30 P.M. CT. Both games will be played at Huntsville Ice Sports Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
